Hyundai Rotem Case Study

South Korean train manufacturer providing electronic maintenance information system supporting trains in Hong Kong.

The Company

The South Korean company ROTEM manufactures trains including Electrical Multiple Units, high-speed trains, light rail vehicles, locomotives, passenger coaches and freight wagons with 2,250 employees including 350 R&D staff.

The requirement

ROTEM built rolling stock for the Hong Kong MTRC TKO subway extension.  As part of their contract, ROTEM delivered Operating and Maintenance documentation and an associated Interactive Electronic Train Manual (IETM) in accordance with stringent requirements stipulated by MTRC.  An essential element of this project involved the definition of the technical information to be provided by the prime Sub-contractors to ROTEM and the ongoing management and review of the O&M data generated through the project.

The solution

Infomill generated a series of specifications that were issued to ROTEM’s network of subcontractors. These ensured that their maintenance information submissions would comply with MTRC’s requirements. They also fitted an overall structure which generated the electronic maintenance system.

These submissions were checked by Infomill prior to loading to the system.  Once this process was completed, the electronic maintenance system was built based on Infomill’s DocumentArena system which is already in use by other customers using PDF.

Interfaces were built and tested to link Infomill’s maintenance information system to a train diagnostic and maintenance system developed by Mitsubishi.

The success

The procedures and processes developed by Infomill allowed the large number of contractors involved in making these new trains provide information in a coherent and effective way minimising costs and maximising accuracy.

MTRC as the end customer has already asked Infomill to enter into discussions with a view to build a long term relationship for other projects.
